Welcome back to Enjoy Your Life. Today, I’ll be briefly reviewing three of my personal favorite restaurants in Honolulu, HI: Marukame Udon Waikiki, Basalt, and Koko Head Café.
Marukame Udon Waikiki (Honolulu, HI)
Address: 2310 Kūhiō Ave. #124, Honolulu, HI 96815
Phone #: 808-931-6000
Hours: Mon~Sun (7AM-10PM)
Marukame Udon Waikiki is located near the Ritz-Carlton Residences, about a 10-minute walk away. While exploring the area around my hotel, I noticed a long line of people outside, which gave me the impression that it must be a popular spot—so I decided to try it.
The prices were comparable to Japanese udon restaurants in Korea, which felt quite reasonable considering the location.
When you enter, you place your udon order first. Since there are usually many people waiting behind you, it’s best to check the menu outside in advance so you can order quickly.
After ordering your udon, you can select from a variety of side dishes displayed cafeteria-style.
The restaurant itself isn’t fancy, but it has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. If you’re staying in the Waikiki area, I definitely recommend stopping by for a casual and satisfying meal.
Basalt (Honolulu, HI)
Address: 2255 Kūhiō Ave., Honolulu, HI 96815
Phone #: 808-923-5689
Hours: Mon~Sun (7AM-10:30PM)
Basalt restaurant is also located near the Ritz-Carlton Residences, about a 10-minute walk away. It is inside Dukes Lane Market & Eatery, which has several restaurants and a small supermarket—perfect for grabbing breakfast or snacks after a meal.
The restaurant has a clean and modern atmosphere.
I ordered a salad and pork belly buns. Personally, whenever I visit a Chinese restaurant in the U.S., I almost always order pork buns because they are consistently delicious. The salad was very fresh, and the pork buns were flavorful. The red sauce that came with them reminded me of red pepper sauce, and dipping the bread into it helped cut through the richness of the pork.
Since I love lobster, I tend to order it often when I’m in the U.S. The lobster at Basalt did not disappoint—it was really delicious.
Overall, the meal was satisfying, and if you’re staying in the Waikiki area, I definitely recommend visiting Basalt.
Koko Head Cafe (Honolulu, HI)
Address: 1145 12th Ave C, Honolulu, HI 96816
Phone #: 808-732-8920
Hours: Mon~Sun (7AM-2:30PM)
When I travel abroad, I always make it a point to try the local food. In Hawaii, I was looking for a good place to try Loco Moco, one of the most famous Hawaiian dishes. During my search, I came across the well-known Koko Head Café. Although they didn’t serve the traditional Loco Moco, they offered a dish with a very similar flavor.
Unlike the other restaurants I visited, you can’t walk to Koko Head Café from the Waikiki area—you’ll need to drive. It’s about a 10-minute drive from The Ritz-Carlton Residences. If you bring a car, there’s a coin parking lot behind the building. However, the lot is quite small, so if you arrive during peak hours like lunch or dinner, finding a spot might be difficult.
The interior has a casual vibe, somewhat similar to a typical fast-food restaurant in the U.S.
I ordered the “Koko Moco,” which came with several toppings layered over rice. It actually reminded me of Korean bibimbap, so I think it would feel familiar and easy to enjoy for Korean travelers. I also tried the Don Buri Chen, which was excellent as well.
Overall, I would recommend Koko Head Café to anyone who wants to experience local Hawaiian-inspired food but may feel hesitant about unusual textures or flavors.
Summary: I was very satisfied with all three restaurants. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere in each place was enjoyable. If I visit Hawaii again, I will definitely return. Overall, I would give the experience four out of five.
Have a great day.
